Then, suddenly I swim.

Shall we buy a few?

Monkeys red and blue.

A dozen machines
come roaring down,
tractors and shovels, 
hydraulics and dumps,
mixers and graders, 
diggers and pumps, 
pushing and groaning
and moving the road to another
place in town.

No, =Jimmy,  says the teacher.
 You cannot call your mother. 
 Then I will call my father,  says =Jimmy.
 No, =Jimmy,  says the teacher,

says =Jimmy.
 No, =Jimmy,  says the teacher.
 You cannot call your grandmother.
This is your dog.
You must learn to take care of him.

     mean what you say.

He says,

He barks and licks =Jimmy's face.

Look him in the eye and tell him again.

look at the light
of the flashlight
in the daytime.
The light | cannot | be seen
from far away.
Do you know why?

Our nearest star, the sun,
is so bright
that it keeps us
from seeing the light
of the flashlight
in the daytime.      
The sun's brightness
also keeps us
from seeing the light
of other stars
in the daytime.



It is schooltime again.
=Jimmy says,

I am going to school.

The children say,

The teacher comes to the playground.
She says,

Jimmy telephones his mother.
The telephone rings and rings.
Mother is not home.
So =Jimmy telephones his father.
 Hello, =Father.
This is =Jimmy.
=Dog followed me to school. 
 Again?  asks =Father.
 Yes, again,  says =Jimmy.
 Will you come get him? 
 Now?  asks =Father.
 Yes, now,  says =Jimmy.
 He's barking at =Teacher. 
 Very well,  says =Father.
 I will come at once. 
=Father comes to school in his big car.
=Dog is happy to see =Father.
He jumps into the car and licks his face.

 I can't find your dime,  he said.
 I have looked all around here. 

=Tommy looked down at the street.
How he wanted that dime!
He wanted a new ball.
He wanted a pony ride.
He wanted candy.
But the dime was =Betsy's.

 Here, =Betsy,  said =Tommy.
 Here is your dime. 



=Anne's dog ran after her.
 Go home, =Pogo,  said =Anne.
 It's no use for you to look
at =Bobby's lunch like that.
This is =Bobby's lunch,
and you can't have it.
Go home, now! 

But =Pogo did not go home.
He went to school with =Anne.



 Oh me, oh my!  said =Peggy.
 Do you think =I will have enough money
to get a big surprise for =Mother? 
 Not with that!  said =Will.
 But I have some money, =Peggy.
I will help you get a big surprise. 

 I don't want help,  said =Peggy.
 I want to get something all by myself. 

 Come on,  said =Carol.
 We will go with you to help you look. 



Now =Peggy was afraid.
 Help!  she called.  Will, help me! 

Will ran and pulled =Peggy
out of the way of the fire.
=Peggy, are you all right?  he said.

 Yes,  said =Peggy.
 But it's a good thing =I was wrong
when I said you were afraid! 

 You were not wrong!  said =Will.
 Peggy, there are some things
it is good to be afraid of.
And a good, big fire is one of them! 



One little =Indian went on working.
He put some more paint
where the kitten had jumped.
He painted a big red pony
and two yellow birds.
Then he went to work on the stick.

After he sawed it in two,
he went to get =Tommy's stick.
Then he was ready to put up the tent.




When =Davy came back,
Mr =Wills did not look happy at all.
 I looked and looked,  he said.
 But I could not find the old toys
that we used to have around here.
This pogo stick was all there was.
You may have it
if you think it will help. 

 Oh boy, a pogo stick!  said =Davy.
 Thank you, Mr =Wills, thank you! 


Just then =Candy's mother
called them to come and eat.
 First I have to give the prize
for the best loser,  said =Candy.

 Oh!  thought =Nancy =May.
 Maybe I will get a prize after all!
No one lost as much as I did! 
But =Candy was not looking at her.
 I am looking for a happy loser, 
said =Candy.

 A happy loser?  said =Nancy =May.
 Is that what you call a good loser? 
Then =Nancy =May laughed.
 Yes, I guess it is!  she said.
 And I guess I will have to learn
how to be one.
Then maybe I will win a prize
the next time!

The next day the pine tree said,
Gold leaves are not for me.
But I would be very happy
if I could have leaves of colored
So the fairy gave the pine tree

But by and by the rain came.
With the rain came the wind.
Oh, how the wind did blow !
One by one the pretty leaves
of glass were broken
All of them were broken.
Not one stayed on the tree!


A big highway ran by =Dick =Wills's 
farm. It ran uphill and downhill all
the way to =Green =Hills.
=Dick had a stand by the roadway. 
There people could buy eggs, flowers,
and other things they liked.
Over his stand =Dick had a big horseshoe
to get people to stop and look and buy !



The wind was blowing.
It was blowing their red candy
all over them.
But what a good time they had!

All the time the wheel
was going around.
It took them high, high up.
It took them down.
It took them around three times.
And at last the ride was over.


=Dick saw his father.
 We are going fishing,  he called.
Mr =Wills looked at the basket.
 If you have lots to eat,
I will go, too,  he said.
I like to fish. And I like to eat! 
Just then =Pat said,  I see
some cars coming up the road.
The last one is ours.
=Mother and =Father are here ! 



How to Make Friends
=Penny and =Pat are twins.
What one does, the other does.
=Pat had a ride on a pig.
Now =Penny wants a ride.
But she does not want
a ride on a pig.

One morning =Dick and the twins
saw Mr =Wills coming up the road.
Here comes =Father
with our best-work horse,  said =Dick.
=OldJoe is a good horse to ride. 



=Happy =Joe called after them,
=Littleclown! =Littleclown!
What do you have in your hat? 
The little clown called, 
You will be surprised. 
He made his horse dance
all around.

Then =Happy =Joe saw a monkey
in a little red coat.
He called,  =Littlemonkey !
Help me get that big, big hat. 



Mr =Bear said,
You are a good friend.
Here is a  can  of green paint.
We will put a new coat 
of paint on my house. 

They went to work.

After a time, Mr =Bear said,
Now my house has a new spring coat.
But look at the door!

Please, may I paint the door? 
Yes, you may,  said Mr =Bear.


I see a clown, said =Ted. 
What a long nose he has!
He looks like a happy clown. 
He is in the circus,  said the man.

The men looked up and down.
They looked and looked.
They did not find =Moonbeam.
Where was =Moonbeam?
Men looked out.
 What is this?  they said.
 We want to go on. 
 We have to find =Moonbeam,
the chimp,  said Mr =Green.
 Then we can go. 


Look, =Moonbeam!  said =Scott.
This is the rocket port.
You will like it here at the port. 
=Moonbeam looked up and down
the rocket port.
Here we are,  said =Scott.
He jumped out with =Moonbeam.
=Joe jumped out, too.
See you soon, =Moonbeam,  he said.
Then he went away to work.


=Scott and =Moonbeam went in.
Here is Dr =Jim,  said =Scott.
 He will look at you, =Moonbeam. 
=Moonbeam looked at Dr =Jim.
Then she jumped away.

Dr =Jim laughed.

from General =Winters.
She jumped on =Scott.

might share his fear, but after a moment the panic
feeling passed. They could do nothing and would
only become terrified. It was up to him alone to
keep the leopards at a safe distance from the cart.
The tiny flame in the lantern made one
last fluttering struggle and went out.
Black darkness shut down over the cart.
=Rodmika could hear the swish of the grass
as the leopards made their short quick
charges through it. Sooner or later, he
feared, one of them would find the courage to leap
upon the cart. He considered cutting the chicken
coop loose. In it were five fine, white leghorn hens
and a rooster that a neighbor had given his mother.
He decided against it, but still, he thought, it would
be better to lose the chickens than have the cats
spring upon the cart.
Another lamp was packed among their possessions.
He didn't know where to find it, but cautiously
thrusting his arm here and there among their
provisions, he began to search. He found only their
supplies. Disgusted, he drew his hand away smeared
with buffalo butter.
An angry snarl came to him from just beyond one
wheel. The bullock on that side snorted in fear and
veered away. The other wheel went into the ditch.
=Rodmika hauled hard on the line to bring the cart
back onto the road just in time to prevent it from
overturning.



Several times =Dino's family had saved enough to
buy two of =Gian-Carlo's legs, and once they had
enough for three legs. Then, each time they had
needed the money for other things. Each time that
the money had been spent =Dino was afraid  
someone else would buy all four legs of =Gian-Carlo before
they ever could, for =Enrico wanted to sell him.
Down, down, through farmyards and olive
orchards, down long flights of steps they wound.
When they reached the narrow stone-paved streets
of the town where cars honked and motor scooters
hooted, =Dino's heart leaped with excitement.
By this time they knew that the sun would not
shine that day. The sea was an angry green. It
snarled in white foam along the rocky headlands.
It burst in upon the fishermen's beach. And before
they ate their bread at noonday, they knew that
they would not sell many pots. Even if tomorrow
was =Christ's =Birthday and =Papa was the finest
painter in all =Italy, no one would buy their wares.

Those would be just the clothes for me!  the
=Emperor thought.  If I wore those, I should be

As for the rogues, they put up two looms and
pretended to be working; but they had nothing at
all on their looms. They at once demanded the
finest silk and velvet and the costliest gold thread.
These they put into their own bags, and worked at
the empty looms till late into the night.
 I should like to know how far they have got on
with the stuff,  thought the =Emperor. But he felt
quite uncomfortable when he remembered that those
who were not fit for their offices could not see it.
He believed, indeed, that he had nothing to fear for
himself, but he preferred first to send someone else
to see how matters stood. All the people in the city
knew what peculiar power the stuff possessed, and
all were anxious to see how bad or how stupid their
neighbors were.
 I will send my faithful old =Minister to the
weavers thought the =Emperor.  He can judge best



We shall need to take a small shovel to dig with
and a pail for some of the treasures we may find.
We would be wise to carry a small magnifying glass,
too. For some of the little creatures and their works
are very, very small.
First let us roam across this sand bar. A few hours
ago it was covered with water; now at ebb tide, the
water has slipped back. The sand bar points at the
sea like a long finger. Its surface is marked with
ridges where the waves have heaped the sand. Tiny
rivers carry off the water that was left behind and
wash deep ditches in the sand, just as much larger
rivers would do inland.
Look at that jet of water spurting up like a small
geyser. Dig quickly if you would find what makes it.
He is trying to get away, and the only way he can go
is down. Now you have him! PuD, and pull hard!
He seems to have roots as he holds fast to the sands.

In the morning the boy set out. The =Indian
walked with him to the end of his own south line
and shook hands.
 You one good boy, =John,  he said unexpectedly.
 You come again next year. 
 I will, sure,  promised =John.  Thanks for all
you've done for me, =Seth. Without you, I couldn't
have done this.  He hitched the heavy pack up on
his shoulder.  I guess, next to the =Judge, you're
about the best friend I ever had. 
The =Indian's brown face wrinkled all over beneath
his battered hat. He made a big gesture with his
hand.  Oh, sure,  he said.  Big country. Nice
company. Plenty furs us both. 
He held =John's hand. He said,  Now listen to
=Seth. If creeks open, you cut two logs crossing. You
mind =Seth. You cut two logs. One log roll. Two
logs safe crossing water. 
Yes, sure,  agreed =John. He wanted to get
away. The sun was well up by now.
  By,  said =Seth.
=John walked hard. He felt strong that morning.
He felt like a grown man. The weight of the pack,
chafing his shoulders, was a pleasure to carry.
Every time he eased it one way or another, he
thought about what it was going to mean. He
thought about coming home and telling his mother.
He would buy her a new dress. He would make a
Purchase of some calico for his sisters. Make a

to swim. It was =Harold =Boyd and a group of his
buddies, including a cousin, =Little =Red, who had been
visiting the =Boyds during the past month.
Harold =Boyd was one boy =David really disliked.

to his bragging and to suffer his bullying.
Harold cupped his hands and hollered again across
the water,  You fellows come out now! We want
to swim. 
Come on in if you want to,  =Ben shouted back.
 Nobody's stopping you. 

The Impractical Chimney Sweep

=John =William's father was a =Practical =Chimney
=Sweep. But then his name was =Albert =George, and,
of course, that made all the difference.
Albert =George used to drive round the town in
his donkey-cart, with all his brushes stuck up above
him like furry chimneys. When people met him,
they would ask,  How is the boy, =Albert =George? Is
he going to be a chimney sweep like you? 
=Albert =George would shake his head and say,  I
don't know. He's not what I'd call practical. 
One morning, =Albert =George and =John =William
set out to clean the chimneys of the house of =Lord
=Summerset. His house was a very big one, built in
the middle of a fine park. It was still dark when
=Albert =George drove up the long drive to the house.



 No, what?  asked =Janie.
 I'm glad you said you were scared. 
=Janie stopped and stared at her.  Why? 
 I never thought you'd be scared of anything.
You made me feel so foolish. You know so much
about picking wood, and you can handle a boat and
do so many things.  Her cheeks were very pink,
but her eyes were steady.  All I know is how to
do housework. So if you hadn't been scared this
afternoon, and I was scared, I guess it would have been
just the last straw. But now I don't feel so foolish
about being stupid in other way.  
You're not stupid,  =Janie objected.  You made
me feel kind of foolish, too, with my mother bragging
about how you like to sew and do housework. I
just do it because it has to be done, and I know I
should do it better, but I just can't keep my mind
on it. 
But you know how to do things in the house and
outdoors, too,  argued =Myra.  And I don't. 
Oh, you'll learn,  said =Janie gaily.  If you stay
on this island long enough, you'll learn to be a real
islander. Everything will work out fine. 
=Myra's lips turned up in a shy but happy smile.
=Janie smiled, too, and here it was, the wonderful
feeling she had expected to have when she first tried
to make friends with =Myra.

her. Once a
    letter came from =Nan's grandmother, who lived a long way
off. 
    Other letters came from other children who could go to
school.

  In the morning the city spreads its wings making a song
of stone 
   that sings. In the evening the city goes to bed hanging

tall man!
  Every day the tall man came to =5th street. Every day, he

    See the sights! See the sights! One day =Dan was walking
on =5th
    street. The tall man was there. He was calling, See the
sights!
   =Dan saw a big sight-seeing bus stop on =5th street.
There was a
    sign on the back of the bus. The sign said, See the

   walked up to the tall man. I want to see the sights, he

    At last the truck came to a stop in a cool barn. A big
blackbird
    looked down from the top of the barn. He could see the

    Mr =Harvey's hat in the back of the truck. A hat, thought

    blackbird! I know something I can do with that! The
blackbird took
    the hat from the truck. In no time at all he was flying
    out of the barn and over to the farmer's scarecrow. He

    said the blackbird. He smiled as he thought of the trick

    played on the farmer. The next Saturday Mr and Mrs
=Harvey went for
    a ride.

    Cat lived under eagle. Pig lived under Cat. They liked to

    way. Three in a tree! When eagle wanted something, he

    down to Cat. When Cat wanted something, she would call
down to Pig.
    When Pig wanted something, he would call up to all the
others. Yes,
    it was good to live this way. Three in a tree! One
morning Cat 
    wanted to sleep but she couldn't. Eagle was going in and

    out of the tree top. Pig made funny noises from his home

    Where are the machines? Why did the workmen stop building
the road? 
    =Jeff's dad looked up from his newspaper. Winter has

Will they find the food I put on the snow. We will see,
said   =Mother. Don't you want to put food in the tree, too?  In
THe tree, said =Pat? Rabbits don't live in trees! No, they
don't,  said =Mother. But you can put food in the tree. And we
will see    who finds it. =Pat said, =Mother! Mother! Come and see
the rabbits.    They are eating the food on the snow. Yes, they
are, said =Mother.    Look in the tree, =Pat. Who is eating the
food you put in the tree?    A raccoon, said =Pat. He's eating in
the tree. I surprised the    rabbits. The raccoon surprised me.  
The raccoons. Little raccoons   can't see. They can't play. 

  Look in the homes, and you will know who made the tracks
you see   in the snow.   Animals in danger. Some animals can hide
from   danger. Can you see the fawn? Can you see the squirrel.
Can you see   the bear. What can ducks do? What can a frog do? What
can raccoons   do? Some animals can get away from danger.   The
Squirrel. Up he goes to the tree top. Round and round. Down he
scampers to the   ground. What a tail. Tall as a feather, broad as
a sail. Where's his  supper. Out it fell.

  Where did you go, asked =Mother? I lost you, =Pete. Oh,
I did not       get lost, said =Pete. The policeman let me ride on
=Dandy. We looked    for you, =Mother. The policeman said, =Dandy
and I like to help     boys. We like to help lost mothers, too.  
The Big Machine.  =James     said, =Ken and I want to go down the
street. We want to see the     big machine. =Mother said, I don't
want you to go down the street.     You can
    see the machine from here. I like to see the machine,
said =James.     But I want to play. Let's do something, =Ken. I
know. Let's     make a machine. =Ken said, Let's make it at my
house.  =Mother, can     I go to =Ken's house, asked =James?  Yes,
you may go, said =Mother.     But don't go down the street. The
boys ran up the street to =Ken's     house.

   I want to sleep, said Mr =Big. Go away and let me sleep.
Did the 
   animals go away? No they did not. I want to see the new
buildings,
   he said. I can walk up and down the streets. And I can
walk in the
    park. I'm going to sleep in the city, too. Mr =Big saw
some
    new buildings. He walked up and down the streets and he
walked
   in the park. Now I want to sleep, said Mr Big. My animals
can't stop
    me from sleeping in the city.  Did Mr =Big go to sleep?
No, he did
   not. Who can sleep in this city, he asked? I can't! Not
with the 
   cars going up and down the streets. The cars come and go,

    don't stop. 

    The policeman said, Who did this? A woman said, Oh, no!
The
    policeman said, Who did this?  The Mayor said, Find Mr
=Pine. Fast!
    All the signs are up, said Mr =Pine. And I can look for
my glasses. 
    Now where are they? He looked and looked. Did I put my
glasses in 
    here, he asked? Mr =Pine looked in the dog house. He
said, My 
    glasses! Here they are. Mr =Pine put the glasses on and
went to
    see the signs. This is what Mr =Pine saw. Oh, my, said Mr
=Pine.
    My signs are all mixed up. Mr =Pine! Mr =Pine, said the
Mayor.
    Do something! Fix the signs.  Mr =Pine went to work. He
fixed all
    the signs in =LittleTown. The signs are not mixed up now.

    He looked up and said, I whistled! I whistled, =Dad. Yes,
you did,
    said =Dad. That was a good whistle. I went =wh and the
whistle came
    out. Fun around home. Red light. Green light. Look what
I made.
    =Penny said, Hop a little. Run a little. Do not stop.
Jump a little.
    Walk a little. Hop, Hop, hop. Away went =Penny down the
street.
    A boy saw =Penny. He saw the bag, too. The boy asked,
What do you
    have in that bag, =Penny? Let me see.  It's a surprise,
said =Penny.
    I can't stop now. On went =Penny down the street. =Penny
said, 
    I can run. And I can hop. I can jump. But I can't stop.
A girl 
    saw =Penny. The girl asked, What's in the bag? A

    The Ant and the Grasshopper.  Hello, little ant, said the
    grasshopper. Will you come and play with me? I will hide
in the 
    grass, and you can look for me there. The ant said, You
can hide
    in the grass. But I can't look for you there. I have work
to do.
   Don't work, said the grasshopper. When do you play,
little ant?
    I don't have time to play, said the ant. I'm looking for
food.
    I'm going to put the food away. And when the snow comes,
I will 
    have food to eat. Work away, said the grasshopper! I'm
going to play
    now. And away he went in the grass. The ant was still
working. She
    called, You can play but I will work. And I will have
food to eat
    when the snow comes.

    When they were eating, City Mouse saw something big. He
said, Run!
    Run, Country Mouse! And don't stop. Away went City Mouse.
And away
    went Country Mouse. They ran out of the house. City Mouse
called,
   Come back, Country Mouse. There is no danger now. The cat
went back
    into the house. But Country Mouse did not stop. He
called, No, I
    don't like to live where there is danger. I'm going home.
Country
    Mouse ran up a hill and into the country. When he got
home he said,
    At last I can stop! I will not go back to the city. Not
where the
    cat is! I will eat country food and City Mouse can live
in danger.

    I used to have a dream long ago about a giant tall as a
tree. He 
    came to the door and said, Come, holding his hand to me.
I never
    went but now that I'm bigger I wish I had. He may have
been a 
    friendly giant and I made him sad.

   Where is your home, he asked the robin? Here, here, here,
sang the
    robin. Here in this nest is my home. Here, here, here
sang the
   robins. Here is our home. Not for me, said the bunny. I
would fall
    out of the nest. I would fall on the ground. So he went
    looking for a home. Where is your home, he asked the
frog? Under
    the water. Down in the bog. Not for me, said the bunny.
Under the
    water, I would drown in bog. So he went looking for a
home. Where do
    you live, he asked a groundhog. In a log, said a
groundhog. May I
    come in, said the bunny? No, you can't come in my log,
said the
    groundhog. So the bunny went down the road. Down the road
and down
   the road he went. He was going to find a home of his own.
A home

wants you
    to come to =4th street at =5. At =4 o'clock =Dad went to

    Street. =Mother did not come. Where can she be, thought
=Dad? At
    =five o'clock =Mother went to =4th Street. =Dad did not
come. Where
    can he be, thought =Mother? When =Mother and =Dad got
home, they 
    called =Ted. You have to remember, they said. When you
answer the
    telephone, you have to remember what is said. I will,
said =Ted.
    

    He would help Mr =Mays with the balloons. Right this way,
=Bill
    called. Balloons! Balloons. Get your balloons here! There
was a
    balloon for every boy and girl at =Anders School. Every
balloon
    had a postcard with it. The postcard said: This balloon
came to you
    from the children at the =Anders School. Please mail the
postcard
    back to the school. We want to know who you are and where
you live.
    Mr =Mays let one balloon go. They he called to the
children. Let the
    balloons go! The children thought about the people who
would get
     the balloons. Who could they be? What fun it would be
when the 
    postcards came back in the mail.

    She couldn't run and hop and jump with the other
children. But every
    day school came to =Nan! Every day Miss =Green came to
help =Nan
    with her schoolwork. And every day Mr =Migs came with the
mail. 
    Long before he came, =Nan was waiting for him. At the
other houses
    Mr =Migs would put the mail in the boxes. But not at
=Nan's house.
    When the mail came for =Nan, Mr =Migs took it right to
her. Once a
    letter came from =Nan's grandmother, who lived a long way
off. 
    Other letters came from other children who could go to
school.

  In the morning the city spreads its wings making a song
of stone 
   that sings. In the evening the city goes to bed hanging
lights about
  its head.      See the sights! See the sights, called the
tall man!
  Every day the tall man came to =5th street. Every day, he
called,
    See the sights! See the sights! One day =Dan was walking
on =5th
    street. The tall man was there. He was calling, See the
sights!
   =Dan saw a big sight-seeing bus stop on =5th street.
There was a
    sign on the back of the bus. The sign said, See the
sights! What 
  sights? Where does the bus go, =Dan thought. The next
day,=Dan 
   walked up to the tall man. I want to see the sights, he
said. When 
    can I take the bus?

    At last the truck came to a stop in a cool barn. A big
blackbird
    looked down from the top of the barn. He could see the
top of
    Mr =Harvey's hat in the back of the truck. A hat, thought
the
    blackbird! I know something I can do with that! The
blackbird took
    the hat from the truck. In no time at all he was flying
    out of the barn and over to the farmer's scarecrow. He
put the hat 
    on top of the scarecrow. Now I know the farmer from the
scarecrow,
    said the blackbird. He smiled as he thought of the trick
he had 
    played on the farmer. The next Saturday Mr and Mrs
=Harvey went for
    a ride.

    Cat lived under eagle. Pig lived under Cat. They liked to
live this
    way. Three in a tree! When eagle wanted something, he
would call
    down to Cat. When Cat wanted something, she would call
down to Pig.
    When Pig wanted something, he would call up to all the
others. Yes,
    it was good to live this way. Three in a tree! One
morning Cat 
    wanted to sleep but she couldn't. Eagle was going in and
out, in and
    out of the tree top. Pig made funny noises from his home
in the 
    tree. How can I sleep here, said Cat? Up, up in the tree
she went.
    See here, Eagle, said Cat. I think Pig is unhappy with
all this 
    going in and out, in and out.

    Where are the machines? Why did the workmen stop building
the road? 
    =Jeff's dad looked up from his newspaper. Winter has
come, =Jeff,
    he said. The men can't work on the road now. It says here
in the 
    paper that the men will go back to work in the spring.
Spring, said
    =Jeff. But spring is far off! When will I find out what
is on the 
   other side of the mountain? The winter was long, but
spring came at 
    last. And with the first spring days came the road
workers. In no
    time at all the road had its new black top. There it was,
a new
    road that went up and over the mountain. =Jeff and =Dad
talked about
    the new road.

    All day long I just stay in this one place. It is no fun
being out
    there alone. Two men come up the hill. The boy sees them.
Help! 
    Help! Please help me! A wolf is going to eat my sheep!
Where? Where
    is that a wolf? Which way did it go? Follow me! The men
follow the
    boy to the top of the hill. I see many sheep, but where
is a wolf?
   Which way did the wolf go? There is no wolf. I played a
trick on
    you. The boy laughs. The second man talks to his friend.
This boy
    has tricked us. Come, my friend. Let's get back on our
horses and 
    get back to the city. We have no time for this boy's
tricks. The men
    ride down the hill.

    Other people we know are always in a hurry. Mothers
hurry. They 
    walk in a hurry and talk in a hurry. And they always want
you in
    a hurry. But =grandfather and I never hurry. We walk
along and walk 
    along. And stop, and look, just as long as we like.
Fathers hurry.
    They hurry off to work and they hurry home again. They
hurry when 
   they kiss you and when they take you for a ride. But
=Grandfather 
    and I never hurry. We walk along, and walk along and

  just as long as we like. Brothers and sisters hurry too.
They go
    so fast they often bump into you. And when they take you
for a walk
    they are always leaving you far behind.

    They toot whistles and blow horns. And sometimes scare

    At last the truck came to a stop in a cool barn. A big
blackbird
    looked down from the top of the barn. He could see the

    Mr =Harvey's hat in the back of the truck. A hat, thought

    blackbird! I know something I can do with that! The
blackbird took
    the hat from the truck. In no time at all he was flying
    out of the barn and over to the farmer's scarecrow. He
put the hat 
    on top of the scarecrow. Now I know the farmer from the
scarecrow,
    said the blackbird. He smiled as he thought of the trick
he had 
    played on the farmer. The next Saturday Mr and Mrs
=Harvey went for
    a ride.

    Cat lived under eagle. Pig lived under Cat. They liked to
live this
    way. Three in a tree! When eagle wanted something, he
would call
    down to Cat. When Cat wanted something, she would call
down to Pig.
    When Pig wanted something, he would call up to all the
others. Yes,
    it was good to live this way. Three in a tree! One
morning Cat 
    wanted to sleep but she couldn't. Eagle was going in and
out, in and
    out of the tree top. Pig made funny noises from his home
in the 
    tree. How can I sleep here, said Cat? Up, up in the tree
she went.
    See here, Eagle, said Cat. I think Pig is unhappy with
all this 
    going in and out, in and out.

    Where are the machines? Why did the workmen stop building
the road? 
    =Jeff's dad looked up from his newspaper. Winter has
come, =Jeff,
    he said. The men can't work on the road now. It says here
in the 
    paper that the men will go back to work in the spring.
Spring, said
    =Jeff. But spring is far off! When will I find out what
is on the 
   other side of the mountain? The winter was long, but
spring came at 
    last. And with the first spring days came the road
workers. In no
    time at all the road had its new black top. There it was,
a new
    road that went up and over the mountain. =Jeff and =Dad
talked about
    the new road.

    All day long I just stay in this one place. It is no fun
being out
    there alone. Two men come up the hill. The boy sees them.
Help! 
    Help! Please help me! A wolf is going to eat my sheep!
Where? Where
    is that a wolf? Which way did it go? Follow me! The men
follow the
    boy to the top of the hill. I see many sheep, but where
is a wolf?
   Which way did the wolf go? There is no wolf. I played a
trick on
    you. The boy laughs. The second man talks to his friend.
This boy
    has tricked us. Come, my friend. Let's get back on our
horses and 
    get back to the city. We have no time for this boy's
tricks. The men
    ride down the hill.

    Other people we know are always in a hurry. Mothers
hurry. They 
    walk in a hurry and talk in a hurry. And they always want
you in
    a hurry. But =grandfather and I never hurry. We walk
along and walk 
    along. And stop, and look, just as long as we like.
Fathers hurry.
    They hurry off to work and they hurry home again. They
hurry when 
   they kiss you and when they take you for a ride. But
=Grandfather 
    and I never hurry. We walk along, and walk along and
stop, and look
  just as long as we like. Brothers and sisters hurry too.
They go
    so fast they often bump into you. And when they take you
for a walk
    they are always leaving you far behind.

    They toot whistles and blow horns. And sometimes scare
you.

=Chitter-Chatter
was a bold little squirrel.
He could not stay afraid.
Not =Chitter-Chatter!
By and by he peeped
out of the nest.
He peeped, and what did he see?
That old owl was not around.
Not in this tree!
Not in that tree!
Not in any tree!
What was there to be afraid of?
Not one thing!
So down the tree he ran.


Everyone was feeling bad
about the spell down.
Everyone but me! So I said,
 I will get the blue ribbon
at the next spell down.
So I will give this blue ribbon 
to the one who knows this word.
The one I will spell for you now!
Write the word on paper
as I spell it. Are you ready? 
Then I started in to spell.
This is the way my word went.
  =LUFITUAEB
Do you want to know something?
No one in our town knew
what that word was.
What do you think about that?



 This page is for =Daddy
when he gets home from his trip, 
said =Janet.
 He can write a riddle, too. 
The next day
=Daddy was back home again.
Before he had time
to get into the house,
the girls were tumbling
all over him.
Tumbling all over him
and talking at the same time!
 Look at what we made! Just look! 



There was just one animal
the blue-eyed colt did not like.
One morning an old red fox
ran out of the woods.
The blue-eyed colt saw the fox
as he ran into the meadow.
The blue-eyed colt was afraid.
He called
to the rest of the colts,
and they came running.
When the red fox saw
all those long, long legs,
he ran back into the green woods.  


One big jump,and =Chitter-Chatter landed
on that round, brown hill.
He landed all right,
but it was not a hill.
It was a big old mud turtle.
Mr =Mud =Turtle had come up
out of the water
to warm himself in the sun.
He did not like to have
a squirrel on his back.
So down under the water he went.
Down under the water after him
went =Chitter-Chatter,
but not for long.



Then =Chitter-Chatter ran on
until he came to the edge
of the green woods.
There in a green meadow
he saw a lamb
and a little brown calf.
In the long grass
at the edge of the woods,
he saw a nest.
He poked his nose down
to see what was in it.
It was a nest of little rabbits.



I think that picture
made =Mark feel better.
That is why
he went right to work
to paint another one.
This time it was =Mother.
There she was at the door
with mud-all-over her.
Socks was all mud, too.
There was =Mark talking to them.
Boy, was he talking!
You could just hear him go on.


My Own Book! My Best Book!

Mother was all by herself
when =David came home.
 =Ting-a-ling!  he called,
as he ran in at the door.
 Uncle =Will is not here,
but I am. See what I have! 
=Mother had to stop her work
right then and there.
 Well, now!  she said,
as she sat down with =David
to look at his animal book.

Miss =Mary looked up
at the trees and the blue sky.
Then she looked around
at her own green grass.
 This grass is all clover, 
she said to herself.
A little clover is all right.
Too much clover
is not good for any grass. 



Just like itself!  said =Daddy.
 You have imagination, =Janet.
How do you make it work? 
Oh, you make up something, 
said =Janet.
 It can be something good.
It can be just in fun.
You have to make it up.
It cannot be something you saw.
It cannot be something you did.
You just make it up.
You call that imagination. 
Let me hear you do it.
Show me how,  said =Daddy.
 All right! You can hear me.
Here I go!  said =Janet.
