What is it?
The Sociology department runs a computerized classroom in Uris Hall room G90 with 23 networked Windows XP machines (2.66 GHz speed, 1 GB of memory), a server for storing files, a laser printer, and a data/video projector.
Installed software [as of 2006-Aug-03]:
- Windows XP Pro, kept up-to-date, including IE 6
- Bear Access, including WS_FTP32 and FileZilla
- Symantec AntiVirus, kept up-to-date
- Firefox 1.5.0.6 web browser
- Microsoft Office Professional XP, which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access.
- Acrobat Reader 7
- PDFCreator 0.9.2
- QuickTime 7.1
- Matlab 6.5
- SPSS 14
- Stata 9 (Intercooled!)
- UCINET 6, including Pajek & Mage
Who may use it?
Cornell academic and administrative staff who need it for training or undergraduate or graduate instruction. It is not for research of any kind, homework, or general use. Priority is given first to Sociology and then to other Arts College departments.
What is it useful for?
- Individual or collaborative student work sessions on computers during class time (e.g. with writing, language learning, or data or image managing software)
- Full-group sessions in which text (written, graphic, filmed) is projected, circulated among stations, stored on the server
- Individual or group work with Internet communications tools
- Demonstrations of software and of CD-based and online research and learning resources
- Face-to-face seminar-style meetings at a central conference table
Capacity
22 student workstations plus 1 instructor workstation, plus 10 or more others seated.
How to Get Access to G90
- Write an email to Sue Meyer, the Sociology
Program Coordinator expressing your need to use Uris G90.
You should include the following information:
- The class that will be taught.
- The times the class begins and ends, including office hours
if G90 is used for office hours.
The building manager needs these times to program the G90 door to be unlocked. He will set the door to unlock 15 minutes before the start of class and 15 minutes after the end of the class. - If the instructor and/or teaching assistants have to use G90 during off hours (which is defined as after 4:30pm or before 8:00am), they will also need to have their Cornell ID cards processed by Bill Grover.
- Enter the class schedule into "schedule-25".
- The Sociology Program Coordinator should respond to this request
by sending a form letter to the instructor and relevant
teaching assistants with a CC to
the Building Manager and
Computer Support :
Dear [Instructor], This note is to confirm that your class, [CLASS REFERENCE] will be using Uris G90 at the following times: class [HOURS] office hours in Uris G90 include [HOURS] [If the instructor and/or teaching assistants need off hour access to G90, include the following:] Since you have requested access to Uris G90 after 4:30pm, for the following people [NAME1], [NAME2], ..., you will need to make arrangements to meet with Bill Grover to have your Cornell ID card processed.
